WHICH ONE ARE YOU?
Question 1 (of 5)
Do you know your organization’s mission statement?
No. I’m in IT, what does it have to do with me?
Sort of. Something like ‘be the best at what we do.’
Yes. It is important my own department contributes to that mission.
Of course! I recite it in my sleep.

Question 2 (of 5)
How does your IT team make procurement decisions?
I make decisions based on what aligns with our IT objectives.
We accept requests, but IT ultimately makes the decisions based on what we think is best.
We publish a framework for tech investment so stakeholders can understand and participate in the process.
We let departments pick their own technology since they are in the best position to know what they need.

Question 3 (of 5)
Do you have visibility into department-level technology purchases?
No. But I don’t need visibility because I don’t allow them to make decisions.
Some. I’m sure departments get their own apps, but there is not much my team can do about it.
Yes. In addition to consulting on procurement, I have tools which give me full visibility and govern usage.
Probably. But I let them manage their own spend and usage anyway.

Question 4 (of 5)
How do you respond to requests for tech spend from stakeholders outside of IT?
Ignore them, tech procurement is IT’s domain!
Hear them out, but it’s a no-go if it doesn’t align with IT’s objectives.
Listen and actively consult with them based on our technology framework.
Approved!

Question 5 (of 5)
The HR VP needs a piece of software and there is no room in the IT budget. The VP says they will buy it themselves if IT won’t fund it. What do you do?
Go straight to the CIO to complain. The HR VP will have to wait in line for next year’s budget.
Be sympathetic, agree to help them ask the CIO for funds, but beyond that my hands are tied.
Help prepare the business case and metrics for success, ensure proper visibility and oversight, then allow the department to procure it.
Tell them to go ahead. It is their budget and their software to govern.

You are a Technology Commander!

You are always on top of your organization’s technology and have good command over your department, which is a great attribute.

However, in today’s world where individuals can easily make their own cloud, IaaS and SaaS purchases, we recommend you loosen your grip and take more of a governance stance.

Digital transformation is about visibility and optimization, not ruling with an iron fist.

Working as a partner with other departments on their business challenges needn’t be a budget and resource drain – rather you should look at it as an opportunity to gain greater oversight so you can take your rightful place as a digital leader within your organization.

You are a Technology Free Spirit!

You are certainly collaborative and understand that working in a silo is an old-fashioned approach to digital transformation.

You also absolutely trust your colleagues and other departments to procure and execute technology as they wish. But beware the danger of too much freedom!

Not everyone is a technology specialist and many look to IT leadership for business partnering and governance.

We recommend implementing a framework to govern your decisions; you won’t be saying yes to departments every time, but they will respect your judgement and understand how it serves the greater digital transformation objectives.

Remember, individuals are not always representative of the overall business strategy and it’s important to stay focussed on how requests feed into a governance framework.

Also consider tools that can help you with visibility and usage, adding some data-driven clout to your free-spirited approach.

Technology Free Spirits are natural collaborators, and that will serve you well when you leverage tools to optimize the overall ecosystem and become a stronger business partner.
